SAM MEMMOLO’S CHARITY CAR & DOG SHOW 2008 Benefiting THE DOUGLAS COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY After a stormy start on May 3, 2008 the weather just would not allow us to continue. Even though we were well underway with the Ray DeLuca playing some great music, Williamson Brother’s barbeque smoking, Papa John’s pizzas sizzling, scores of volunteers, hundreds of participants and spectators having a great time, we had to call the show. Two weeks later on the scheduled rain date, May 17 we went hard at it again. Over 20 colorful vendor and information tents spread along a crescent shape at Clinton Nature Preserve with the Memmolo’s motor home anchoring in the center created an almost carnival like atmosphere. Terrific music, excellent food, and the best volunteers anyone could imagine provided the setting for an extremely successful event. Even on the rain date over 90 registered show vehicles showed up, along with a great motorcycles. There were hundreds of people sharing the beautiful weather and enjoying some of the best Hot Rods, Street Rods, Muscle Cars and Classics ever assembled in north west Georgia. The signature of this event is the best “Goody Bags” and “Door Prizes” of any show in the south, as well as terrific items available at the silent auction, raffles, and the sale tables. Real Car stuff for Real Car folks!!! All funds raised directly benefit the animals of Douglas County, and that not only improves the quality of life for the animals, but for everyone in Douglas County! It was a heartwarming experience to see so many strangers with so much in common sharing lunch across the many picnic tables set up across from the food vendors. Strangers and friends coming together to share stories, break bread together and make new friends as well as lifetime memories. Williamson Brother’s Barbeque provided some of the Southeast’s finest barbeque all served up with a smile by their excellent catering staff. The fine folks at Papa John’s Pizza kept a continuous stream of personal pizzas flowing to the delight of the hungry crowd. Papa John’s served some delicious ice cream. There was an additional dessert feature provided by the Girl Scouts of America with their great cookies. Wash all these goodies down with sweet tea, cold sodas, and ice cold water and you have the makings of some pretty content car folks. We could not have hosted such an incredible show without the willing support from Douglas County Parks and Recreation department staffers, the new Park Security Officers, and of course the untiring Douglas County Humane Society volunteers who worked very hard to insure that everyone had what they needed to have the best time possible. I cannot thank everyone enough! The registered participants, the motorcycle poker run folks, the spectators who came out to have a fun in the sun day while viewing some great show vehicles, and the dog lovers who proudly paraded their pets for all to see and enjoy. The dog show was outstanding, went off without a hitch, and the canine attendance was even larger than last year. It confirmed the fact that the citizens of Douglas County and neighboring areas really love their pets. A special thanks to Sheriff Phil Miller for allowing his terrific staff of K-9 officers and their special dogs. They showed their skills at tracking down illegal substances and quickly apprehending bad guys. The citizens and visitors to Douglas County are very fortunate to have such remarkable and dedicated law enforcement to provide the safe environment we all enjoy here. This charity show was made possible by the generous donations of all our sponsors who were listed on the giant sign board adjacent to the motor home. I would personally like to take this opportunity to extend a deeply heartfelt thanks to each and every contributor. Some even came out to display their personal vehicles and join in the fun. 32 trophies were presented to the class winners as judged by the most professional judges in the business, Jim Parham from Parmck International. Jim and his staff of AMCA (American Muscle Car Association) judges donated their entire day to the DC Humane Society for the second year in a row. Judging any show is a tall order and we thank them immensely. We hope everyone who attended had a great time and we look forward to an even bigger and better show in spring 2009. Keep it right here on Sam’s Garage for all the latest. Think about it! Where else can you find a Car Show and a Dog Show together???? Happy motoring and thank you all for your caring and generosity! See you all next year! Diana and Sam Memmolo, the staff of Douglas County Humane Society, and most importantly, thank you from the hearts and minds of the animals of Douglas County.
